The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, located on 1,620 acres of land 25 miles southeast of Houston, has several specific responsibilities in connection with the manned space flight program including flight crew selection, training and mission.
Johnson Space Center offers free daily tours 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 pm. The visitor can see the fascinating collection of spacecraft and flight articles, NASA exhibits, viewing of NASA films, the Mission Control center and many other interesting items pertaining to our space program.
Mankind has received many benefits from the space research conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Many of these marvelous achievements are well known at this time, i.e., the rechargeable pacemaker; the voice controlled mechanical arm wheelchair; mobile isolation garments and a host of other remarkable tools generated by the technology of the Space Program.
Despite the many achievements made thus far, the space age is still in its infancy.
Staggering sights seen in movies like "Star Wars," Space Stations, Space Colonies, Space Cargo Liners, Solar Power and Space Work Shops are just a few of the dreams that are now considered to be realities of the near future. The "SPACE SHUTTLE" is playing a vital role in making these fantasies the realities of tomorrow. We have devoted the latter part of this booklet to pictures and events surrounding this latest spectacular addition to the Space Age - The SPACE SHUTTLE ...... Also pictured are many of the dramatic scenes of historical events that have taken place in our recent probings into outer space. Man's first steps on the moon that were viewed by millions on TV when it happened, but the memory of that feat can never be more profound than viewing the actual pictures taken on the moon at those exact moments.
Life support systems developed for the space program have found their way into many facets of our everyday life in the medical field. Hundreds of other amenities, spanning an area from huge computers down to the smallest digital watch that you may be wearing on your wrist have become second-nature to us ... all, due to aerospace research and development.
Known as "The Home of the Astronauts," the Johnson Space Center is proud to have been a keystone in the development of the aerospace program and is continuing to work toward more and better things, not only in space, but for mankind as well. We are equally proud to have you visit our facility. No matter how many times you may visit us you will always be impressed, because there are always new and exciting aspects.
