Dwarf Star Puts on Powerful Displays

Astronomers have discovered that magnetic fields clashing in the atmosphere of dwarf star TVLM513-46546, which is only one tenth the mass of our Sun, are creating minute-long flares.

The flares were discovered by Edo Berger and colleagues at Princeton University, who also found that the star, 35-light years distant, has a hot spot covering half its surface.
