A team from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), viewing 2000 aerial and satellite photographs of the Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches north from the continent of Antarctica toward South America, have determined that 87 percent of the glaciers on the peninsula have retreated over the past 50 years. The team observed photographs dating back to 1940. They have found that the glaciers are retreating an average of 50 meters a year. This may be more evidence of global warming. In recent decades, the air around the Antarctic Peninsula has warmed by 2.5°C, which is five times the Antarctic average.
