Human Activity has Changed the Earth

A four-year study commissioned by the UN for its Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis report has found that humans have depleted resources and changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively in the last 50 years than in any other period. For example, more land has been converted to agriculture since 1945 than in the 18th and 19th centuries put together, approximately 10 to 30 per cent of bird, amphibian and mammal species are now threatened with extinction, and a fifth of coral reefs and a third of mangrove forests have been destroyed in recent decades.

The report said that the only way to save exploited natural resources is to treat them as if they have a value. For example, the price of food should reflect the cost of cleaning waterways polluted by agro chemicals from the land, and airlines should pay for the carbon dioxide they release.
