LEDs lighting the way...

LEDs are making a come-back, the old technology has been given a new lease of life that could see it lighting the homes and spacecraft of the future. Light-emitting diodes are extremely efficient because they don’t get hot, white light can be achieved by combining the output of red, green and blue LEDs.

The problem at the moment though is that the temperature of an individual room or cabin affects each of the different color diodes in a different way, making the light produced inconsistent – the way to get around this problem, says Luminator of Plano, Texas, is to cut the electricity supply to the diodes down to short bursts, variable depending on the temperature of the room; each individual diode receives different lengths of electricity bursts, decided by a thermostat, and the overall effect is a consistent white light with none of the drawbacks of a conventional light-bulb.
